Journey into Mystery #520 (of 521)
The Long Cold Kill! - Chapter One
May 31st, 1998
Meet Hannibal King! Private eye and…vampire??
Hannibal King's current case has him searching for the kidnapped daughter of his clients. He finds her in the clutches of a trio of vampires, the first of whom he kills with an incendiary bullet, and the second he stakes with a broken chair leg. The remaining vamp tries to coax King into joining him in making a meal of the girl, but King dispatches him with another shot. He sees the girl safely to her home.
Some time later, King is working in his office when in walks Tatjana Stiles, a woman who claims her husband was abducted by vampires. Her story is that they were driving on a dark rural road, when a vampire biker gang attacked their car. They dragged her husband out of the vehicle and flew off with him, leaving her to crash into a tree. King agrees to take her case and find the man.
At the crash scene, King searches for clues and finds blood and bullet holes on the abandoned motorcycles, along with service stickers providing the name and address of a garage, which he then heads for. There, he accesses the computer to get the address of the bike owners. He goes to the address and breaks into the living quarters, where he finds two thuggish vampires. King tries to shoot them, but one burns him with ignited lighter fluid, then turns to mist and tries to enter King's lungs. The detective rips open his own throat to expel the vampire and the other one impales King with a stick. The trauma causes King to pass out.
When he comes to two nights later, King finds himself in an airtight cell, while an unseen speaker demands the whereabouts of Ms. Stiles. King refuses, and the voice tells him he will be deprived of blood till he cooperates. The next night, King's captors throw a homeless man in with him as a temptation to break his vow to never feed on humans.
Two more nights pass as King grows weaker in strength and will, while the vagrant sits in fear and despair. On the sixth night, the two thugs enter and feed on the man, but leave him alive and bleeding. The man pleads with King to not let him become one of the undead, and the vampire detective, unable to resist any longer, drains his fellow captive of blood.
